Cleaning Hardwood Floors

Cleaning wood floors is easy, as long as you do it right, with the right supplies. Sweeping has to be done using soft and fine bristle brooms while vacuuming has to be done once or twice a week to get rid of dirt and sand. To minimize scratching on the floors, use a soft brush attachment where required.

As water is very bad for wood floors, make sure you get rid of any water spills or floods immediately. Use soft towels or a wet/dry vacuum and then dry. Mopping the floors thus has to be done using a very damp mop as excess water will only seep into seems to ruin the floor.

Make sure you vacuum area rugs and runners frequently so that there is no possibility of any dirt filtering through the weaves, and thus scratching the wood below. If you have kids at home, there is a chance of kids drawing on the floors. To make cleaning easy, give them washable crayons.

Use neutral pH cleaning products for cleaning wood floors

However if you have a wax crayon drawing to take care of, rub the area with toothpaste using a damp cloth. Once the picture is gone, clean off the remaining toothpaste.

Make it a point to clean hardwood floors with a neutral pH cleaning product to remove accumulated surface dirt and grease. Don’t use ammonia based or straight ammonia cleaning products as they only dull the finish and may change the color of the wood.

If pets or small kids urinate on the floor, wipe the mess off immediately using paper towels and then with detergent and water. The stain then has to be removed using a cloth drenched with rubbing alcohol, to be topped off with a commercial odor neutralizer and stain remover.

It is important to do this immediately as with time, urine can not only discolor the floor boards, but also make the floor smell. Follow all these tips and you find cleaning wood floors to be a much easier task then you had thought.
