Do You Think Its A Good Idea To Replace Hardwood Flooring In The Bathroom With Tile?

I would opt for tile. I just bought a new home with hardwood flooring in entire first floor including the guest bathroom and kitchen. I am finding the kitchen floor extremely hard to maintain. I would soo love to have those two sections done in tile. In your case especially if the bathroom in question has a tub, with the constant moisture and drips the flooring will go bad and show its age with cracks and separations between the panels much much quicker than the rest of the house.

I would not suggest putting hardwood in a bathroom. Tile would be the #1 choice. Wood in a bathroom is prone to mildew because of the moisture that is in a bathroom. But you mentioned that the owner wanted the hardwood flooring to be left so I would discuss this with him and tell him of your concerns. Mold is also a health hazard, mold grows and will spread to other areas. I would convince him to go with tile. Good Luck.

Why anyone would have a hardwood floor in a bathroom is unknown to me. Its going to (if it hasn’t already) rot & warp. But if you’re not the owner, there’s nothing you can do legally. Explain the risks, but its ultimately the owners decision.

I assume by the fact that by your own statement “the owner told me he wanted the hardwood flooring left untouched”, you are renting the house.
If this is the case, you have no legal right to make any change without his approval. It may take more discussions with the owner as to what changes he may approve. You may want the assistance of a designer or architect skilled in restoration of similar homes for ideas to present to the owner.

I would not remodel a home that I am renting unless the owner gave permission in writing. You may be letting yourself in for a very large and intense headache!!! Not to mention serious legal problems.

Hardwood floors are one of the nicest and most durable floors to have. It will be a lot of work to cover the floor with tile, (ceramic) if that is what you mean by tile. Tile is expensive to install and you must know what your doing in order to do it correctly.
I suggest you sand the wood floors down and put a new coat of sealant on them they will look beautiful. You say the floors look like they were getting wet, if there are now leaks they should not be getting wet unless the people before you were very careless.
If the owner doesn’t want them touched dont touch them you can clean them really well (a bit of blood sweat and tears perhaps) and put some polyurethane on them and wa la a new shiny wood floor. Wood floors will look the very nice with the claw foot tub.

Well, in the case of hardwood, you have to keep an eye on the floor finish and add another coat every year or so. After all, there are boats on the water that are made out of wood and have marine varnish on them and have lasted for50 years or longer. Also on the walls, use an oil based paint semi gloss or high gloss(to repel the water) You could use latex, but only high gloss and 100% Acrylic – that will be like a coating of plastic.

tile is more water resistant than wood. But if the owner wants the wood untouched you might lose your security deposit if you mess it up try a bath mat or a be care full with the shower cur ten if there is a shower in there

If you cannot remove the flooring, then covering it with tile will ruin the hardwood floor underneath forever, I suggest sanding the floor well, and apply several coats of good polyurethane, this will make the floor look so good and will last for a very long time even in the bathroom.

yes, I would say replace it. . . i think all bathroms should have tile floor.
