Installing Hardwood Floors

Installing floating hardwood flooring is better done by a professional. However if you intend to do it on your own, you have to first get the hardwood tested for moisture. As different manufacturers have different guidelines, it is important that you consult the manufacturer’s specifications before you start installing floating hardwood flooring.

There are some manufacturers who void warranties of the flooring if their recommended products are not used on it. So make sure you follow all specifications stated by manufacturers.

Choose the right underlayment for the floating hardwood flooring. If it is a 3 in 1 foam underlayment, the side with the moisture barrier has to be laid on the concrete slab. The other side has foam cushioning with peel off sticky tape which is used for attaching rows together.

Better to start from left to right

The underlayment has to be rolled out and lapped on the sides by a few inches to work as a moisture barrier. Anything in excess has to be cut off using a knife. As this underlayment has a sticky tape, there is no need of taping seams; just ensure you have the right side up and the sticky tape side down.

Installing floating hardwood floors can be difficult as its boards tend to move in the starting area. It is always better to start installing along the longest parallel wall of the room. However, make sure that the first few rows are straight and gap free else the gaps keep repeating across the layout.

It is better to start from left to right, while staggering the starting boards as far apart as possible. It is possible to prevent the first few rows from moving apart by placing scraps and wedges in the expansion areas.

Follow the manufacturer’s specifications when applying glue for installation. Some suggest using a bead of glue on the top of the tongue of boards while others ask for filling or partially filling the board’s grooves.
