solid hardwood is usually your best bet.
although you can spend much more on it, a nice apartment can be bought for about $ 3 – $ 4 / sq. ft. facility and usually runs another foot 2/sq $ $ 1 – (Home Depot is a very competitive price timber). Solid wood will last 100 years, and always can be varnished for a minimal cost to look like new. Oak is the best for the price and are available in different qualities for different prices, just look over several samples before making a purchase, because sometimes a sales person shows you the best displayed as a few degrees can have knots minor / inconsistancies.
The closest thing to solid wood is engineered wood that is actually a very thin layer of real solid wood on top of the board pressing, they have as good and costs about 25% less on average, and may even be painted or refurbished usually once, maybe twice with the use of light.
For all these laminate floors wooden style that never seem to recommend the price difference, whatever is, is a luxury vinyl tile on top of particle board, and I know that many people are happy with Pergo, but ask again in a few years, because the flooring options just do not hold up, and when scratched it – throw them away because it can never be varnished, too, no matter what the great guarantee of these is – in fact almost never honor the warranty because theres tons of loop holes to it. My boyfreind installed tons of these professionals and after some years there were tons of unsatisfied customers who thought they had a guarantee of 10 years, so I replaced the floors of dollars in your account to maintain a satisfied customer and nearly went bankrupt in because of it. I do not care how much you spend on a sheet – its garbage.

If you want the look of hardwood, but not spending, that laminate flooring can be your best bet. There are a lot of choices out there for products of this type, and a lot of rolling lines will give the same visual effects like real wood floors – "hand scraped" surfaces, narrow board effects and more . I've included a couple of links below to give you the basics of what laminate flooring can offer, including durability.
Good luck with your project, whatever you want.
